Kybella: Injectable Double Chin Reduction

Kybella: Injectable Double Chin Reduction

What is Kybella for Double Chin Removal?

Kybella is the first and only FDA-approved injectable treatment designed to reduce the appearance of a moderate to severe double chin, also known as submental fullness. Its active ingredient is a synthetic version of deoxycholic acid. This is a naturally-occurring molecule that our bodies produce to digest and absorb fat.

Use of Kybella is a simple procedure. Generally, a series of injections is given to your submental area (under your chin) while the skin is pinched. This pinching helps to separate the fat from your platysma muscle, which helps to get the deoxycholic acid where it should be.

Injecting Kybella is a great option to permanently melt submental fat. Results are gradual and most patients need 2-4 treatments spaced 8-12 weeks apart. Some patients have up to six treatments.

Kybella for Double Chin Removal

Kybella works by destroying some of your fat cells under your chin. They can no longer store fat and are extremely unlikely to be replaced by more fat stem cells, so you can expect permanent results.

Weight gain, genetics, and aging are common causes of double chin. Age-related changes to fat distribution and tissue integrity can promote the development of double chin, or genetic factors can mean you’ve always had submental fullness. Some people notice that overall weight gain disproportionately affects their chin, even after otherwise successful weight loss.

Submental liposuction is another excellent way to sculpt the neck and jawline and can be done in office with just the numbing medicine (no sedation or general anesthesia necessary). However, some people still prefer an injectable treatment.

The Best Candidates for This Treatment

The best candidates to receive this double chin fat reduction injection are:

  • Patients who are bothered by their double chin, but don’t want to have surgery
  • Patients who feel that their chin makes them appear older or heavier
  • Patients who haven’t found a reduction in their submental fat from diet or exercise, even if other areas of their bodies have responded
  • Those with realistic expectations of the procedure’s results.

When Will I See Results from Kybella Injections?

You can expect to see results from Kybella within six months, or six monthly treatments. In clinical trials, the percentage of patients and their doctors noticing significant improvements were:

  • 8% after one treatment;
  • 28% after two series of injections;
  • 43% after three treatments;
  • 55% after the fourth series of injections;
  • 66% after five treatments;
  • 72% after the sixth, and almost always final, injections.

It’s important to remember that a healthy diet and lifestyle cannot be replaced by any cosmetic procedure. As cigarette smoking speeds up aging and increases the risk of side effects from cosmetic treatments, including injectables, we advise you to consider quitting.

The average cost of Kybella varies by the number of treatments you need, your location, and your doctor’s level of experience in cosmetic medicine
