Effects Of RF Microneedling in Skincare
25 January 2024
Modern cosmetic therapies rely on stimulating your body’s natural regenerative processes, increasing them to a more youthful level. One of these is radiofrequency (RF) microneedling. It goes beyond simply covering up tissue aging by creating controlled “injuries” through tiny needles and radiofrequency energy. This is far less invasive and painful than many other treatments, making it a popular treatment in Nuance’s Las Vegas, Nevada, clinic.
Who Can Benefit from RF Microneedling Treatment?
Radiofrequency microneedling can benefit adults of all ages. It’s best if you have earlier signs of aging and overall good skin health, but unsuitable if you have a skin infection or produce excessive scar tissue.
Studies show benefits for:
- Reduced severity of skin wrinkling, such as around the eyes. RF microneedling is more effective than Botox at increasing procollagen-3, elastin, and other tissue proteins that decline with age. This leads to longer-lasting results.
- Decreased appearance of atrophic acne scars, which have a sunken appearance
- Smoother skin texture and reduced pore size in acne-prone skin
- Tightening loose facial skin; some studies have demonstrated significant improvement in all patients.
How Does It Work?
Microneedling is a tightly controlled “injury”, and the radiofrequency added onto it allows this to penetrate deeper into the skin’s tissue. The healing, acute inflammatory response stimulates the generation of growth factors, which normally decline with age. Microscopic analysis shows a five times higher level of collagen and elastin production after treatment.
As for scarring, the needles puncture the scar tissue, allowing for new blood vessels to re-enter the area. More normal tissue is then able to grow, reducing the appearance of scarring over time.
How Long Will the Results Last After Radiofrequency Microneedling?
RF microneedling can take years off of your appearance. When looking at example photographs of patients in clinical studies, we’d say they look 10-20 years younger after treatment. Patients using RF microneedling for acne scarring and open pores generally look fresher and brighter, with considerably smoother skin. Remaining scars are typically barely noticeable.
After your initial course of treatment, which is typically four to six sessions spaced apart by three to eight weeks, you can expect the results to hold up for about one year. You can then have a maintenance treatment each year without repeating the initial course. Some research reports that effects can last five to seven years, but they will have partially worn off by this time.
