Hair Transplant for Women

You may think of hair loss as a men’s health issue, but it is expected to affect over 40% of women at some point. This is why Dr. Mehdi Sina and Dr. Jeannie Khavkin provide hair transplant for women in Las Vegas at Nuance Aesthetics & Plastic Surgery.

Causes of Hair Loss in Women

There are a number of reasons why you may experience hair loss as a woman:

  • Nutrient deficiencies, such as protein, zinc, or iron
  • Sudden or problematic hormonal changes, e.g. pregnancy, ceasing birth control, menopause, high testosterone, or thyroid disorders
  • Traction alopecia, where tight hairstyles damage the follicles
  • Scarring from burns, injury, and surgeries
  • Autoimmune alopecia
  • Drugs such as some chemotherapy agents for cancer.

FUE Hair Transplant Surgery for Women

Hairline restoration for women can be performed using the Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) method.  It’s the best form of hair replacement for women so far, as the placement of individual hair follicles (or groups of up to five) gives you a natural, youthful appearance. You can even choose a non-shaving method if you don’t want the entire potential donor site shaved.

How is Hair Transplant Done in Females?

Hair transplant surgery for women is performed in the same way as it is for men. Here, a device removes groups of 1-5 hair follicles from a “donor” site on the back of your head, and your surgeon implants them in problem areas using tiny incisions. At Nuance, we use the Neograft wand, which is more gentle than older devices.

Female Hair Transplant Results and Recovery

Recovery from a female hair transplant is similar to men. You must avoid touching the area for the first few days, and you can resume normal washing, brushing, and other activity after around three weeks. You can expect to see significant growth of your transplanted hair in three to six months.

FUE is effective in covering excessively high hairlines and female-pattern baldness. Although your original hair density may not be completely restored, your longer hair will likely cover any remaining gaps. If you’re reducing the appearance of a scar, it will be much easier to comb over or may even be barely visible.

Who is the Candidate for Female Hair Transplant?

The best candidate for a female hair transplant has localized, stable alopecia, which only appears in a minority of women. If you have thinning hair, other treatment such as hormone replacement therapy is more suitable.

Common reasons why hair replacement for women is performed include surgical, injury, or burn scars, from chemical burns to scars left over from cosmetic surgery. Traction alopecia is another frequent problem.

How Much is a Hair Transplant for Women in Las Vegas?

The surgeons at Nuance can give you one of the best female hair transplants in Las Vegas, but we aim to minimize costs as much as possible. While the Neograft FUE procedure in Las Vegas costs $5-12 per follicle unit, we keep it to the lower range. Depending on the size of the affected area, you may need 1-2,000 follicular units moved.

F.A.Q.

Transplanted hair takes root and grows just like regular hair, so you can expect long-term benefits.
Technically, yes. However, hair loss from age-related causes such as menopause affects all hair on a woman’s head, regardless of its original location.
Hair loss can reappear from hormonal or nutritional causes, and traction alopecia. There will often be an initial “shock” phase where transplanted hair falls out, but it grows back within several months.
Your surgeon will give you a local anesthetic, so you won’t feel much during the procedure. Afterwards, you can expect to relieve any pain from the normal inflammatory process with over-the-counter relief.
Hair implants for women are beneficial in all age groups, including girls who have suffered accidents. If you are over 50, you may need extra intervention such as HRT or minoxidil.
